Welcome to the Happily Ever Laughter podcast,

2

:

Dynae: a positive space where we try to

find the humor in the craziness of life

3

:

Matt: because life is crazy.

4

:

Dynae: That's for sure.

5

:

Matt: I'm Matt

6

:

Dynae: and I'm Dynae.

7

:

Matt: And now on with the show.

8

:

Dynae: What do you want me to do about it?

9

:

I can't not have saliva.

10

:

Matt: Stop making mouth noises.

11

:

All your

12

:

Dynae: it's hot in here...

13

:

Matt: so take off all your clothes...

14

:

I am gettin too hot.

15

:

Is this how we're going

to start the episode?

16

:

Dynae: Yeah.

17

:

So we're talking about Halloween.

18

:

Matt: Just talking about

Halloween and stuff.

19

:

Welcome.

20

:

I'm just going to start it.

21

:

We're going to leave that in there.

22

:

Mouth sounds and all.

23

:

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome

to the next episode of the

24

:

Happily Ever Laughter Podcast.

25

:

Dynae: I'll try to keep my

mouth sounds to a minimum.

26

:

Matt: Okay.

27

:

That's probably good.

28

:

, Dynae, tell us what we're

talking about today.

29

:

Dynae: Spooky season,

30

:

Matt: spooky season.

31

:

Dynae: It's our favorite season.

32

:

And I thought it was timely because

we're coming back right around

33

:

this time, Halloween is next week.

34

:

And I don't know when this is gonna

air, but it's right around that time.

35

:

Matt: We're still trying to

figure out the new schedule

36

:

Dynae: and when we're going

to actually release episodes.

37

:

Matt: And the new hosting.

38

:

Like, we've started with

a new hosting platform.

39

:

Yeah.

40

:

We are now on Captivate.

41

:

So if anyone from Captivate is listening.

42

:

Dynae: It was one of those where it

was like, they had a lot of tutorials

43

:

and stuff I could learn how to do.

44

:

Yep.

45

:

That's what we're hoping.

46

:

It'll go well.

47

:

Matt: Indeed.

48

:

You know what, before we start, can I try

something that I've always wanted to do?

49

:

Dynae: Okay.

50

:

Matt: Because it is the Halloween episode.

51

:

Dynae: Okay.

52

:

Matt: Okay.

53

:

So I've always really liked, well,

Michael Jackson's my favorite musician.

54

:

Like I grew up, I mean, that

sounds really bad to say right now.

55

:

Dynae: Yeah.

56

:

In light of some of the other

stuff, but growing up when we did.

57

:

Matt: Growing up before all of the

questionable things came out, Michael

58

:

Jackson was my favorite artist.

59

:

Dynae: Yeah.

60

:

Matt: That's what I meant.

61

:

Um, so I've always wanted

to do, I like to do voices.

62

:

We talked about it in the last

episode, doing voiceover work.

63

:

I've always wanted to try to do a

Halloween version of the thriller.

64

:

Vincent price.

65

:

So I'm going to put on some spooky music

and then try one live right now with you.

66

:

And then you can tell me if it sucks.

67

:

Dynae: Okay.

68

:

Matt: We won't be able to hear the

music until I put it afterwards.

69

:

But yes, I'm cool.

70

:

And my voice feels really deep today.

71

:

So that's my voice feels because

72

:

Dynae: because you didn't sleep.

73

:

Matt: Oh, so maybe I shouldn't

sleep before we ever do podcasts.

74

:

Dynae: There you go.

75

:

Matt: And that'll be the way to do it.

76

:

Okay.

77

:

Dynae: You gotta prep.

78

:

Matt: Let's do this.

79

:

Darkness falls across the land.

80

:

The midnight hour is close at hand.

81

:

Creatures crawl in search of blood

to terrorize yall's, neighborhood

82

:

and whosoever shall be found.

83

:

without the soul for getting down must

stand and face the hounds of hell and

84

:

rot inside a corpsey shell and though

you fight to stay alive your body

85

:

starts to shiver for no mere mortal

can resist the evil of the thriller

86

:

Dynae: I was gonna say you

have to end it on the laugh

87

:

And a cough, apparently.

88

:

Matt: The old laugh and a cough.

89

:

Dynae: You know, we're

getting old, and that happens.

90

:

Matt: There's so many things that old

people do that I'm looking forward to.

91

:

Dynae: That we're finding ourselves.

92

:

Matt: Yeah.

93

:

Like the, uh, the hiccup burp or,

you know, the things where you just

94

:

make a bodily function sound and then

another one comes out, you're like,

95

:

whoops, no, that was that a whoops.

96

:

Like I, all right.

97

:

So

98

:

Dynae: you can tell what

kind of mood we're in.

99

:

Matt: Yeah.

100

:

We got a Vincent price in there.

101

:

We got a little bit of Halloween.

102

:

We got a little goofy mood this morning.

103

:

Accidental sharts.

104

:

Bye.

105

:

Bye.

106

:

Bye.

107

:

Welcome to the podcast.

108

:

Dynae: I thought they're

always accidental.

109

:

Matt: This would be a good clip

to cut to put as our trailer to be

110

:

like, Hey, listen to this episode.

111

:

Do you have accidental sharts?

112

:

Dynae: You could do the ads.

113

:

Matt: I should.

114

:

Oh, Oh, All right.

115

:

Dynae: All right.

116

:

We got some new ideas going on.

117

:

Matt: We should probably start

talking about spooky season because

118

:

Dynae: We're gonna go over so long.

119

:

Okay.

120

:

Yeah.

121

:

Yeah, it's our favorite season Next well,

we like Christmas as well But this is

122

:

like one of those holidays that just kind

of gets overlooked by a lot of people

123

:

But it's so much fun for the cult of

people, obviously, that love it like us.

124

:

Matt: So I would 100 percent

take Halloween over christmas.

125

:

Dynae: Oh, would you?

126

:

Well, there's a lot of commercialism

and stuff in both to be fair,

127

:

but it's just one of those.

128

:

It's just kind of fun and you can

do whatever you want and we are

129

:

a family of actors, so it's fun

to dress up and do all of that.

130

:

Matt: Yeah.

131

:

Christmas always seems like though it's.

132

:

Not forced, but you know what I mean

133

:

Dynae: like an obligation.

134

:

Matt: Yeah, like oh if you really

love me, you'll buy me something

135

:

expensive Instead of just being

like hey, let's be with family.

136

:

Halloween is kind of that though where

you just get together Yeah, you're with

137

:

all the kids you're with your nieces

and nephews you go trick or treating

138

:

and that is more of a family vibe

Yeah, but we also like the more macabre

139

:

Dynae: Yeah.

140

:

Matt: Darker stuff in our house.

141

:

I mean, we're sitting in my music

room slash office slash YouTube

142

:

studio slash all of the above.

143

:

Dynae: Media room, basically.

144

:

Matt: Media room, yes.

145

:

I can see five skulls

just sitting where I'm at.

146

:

Because.

147

:

Dynae: You question is that is that

too many skulls, you know, I don't know

148

:

come by our house during spooky season.

149

:

Matt: There you go I'm

actually getting ready to redo.

150

:

I know this is off topic again.

151

:

We'll get into this We have a

skeleton hanging from our front

152

:

door kids named him Sheldon.

153

:

Dynae: Yeah, Sheldon the skeleton.

154

:

Matt: Yep I actually just did a

video and I haven't posted it yet.

155

:

So I'll post it on our TikTok Uh,

if we ever get the name changed.

156

:

So basically I took a

skeleton I got at home Depot.

157

:

I tried all the stuff where you

put Saran wrap around his body and

158

:

then you use a heat gun and it kind

of melts it to look like flesh.

159

:

And then it

160

:

Dynae: kind of like has

that zombie look to it.

161

:

Matt: Yeah.

162

:

So it's like a.

163

:

Stuff kind of hanging off and there's,

there's strings in between the

164

:

bones and strings between the bones,

165

:

Dynae: which in all honesty

we thought looked pretty cool.

166

:

But then you hung it up and I came home

with Cora and instantly, soon as she saw

167

:

it, she's like, Nope, don't like that.

168

:

Yeah.

169

:

Like the Michael Scott meme.

170

:

Just Nope, not going to do that.

171

:

Matt: Well, and I used like

different shades of brown.

172

:

So it looked like it had crawled out

of the earth and that type of stuff.

173

:

She didn't like it.

174

:

So my next idea was I was going to be

like, well, what if we made every skull

175

:

and skeleton in our yard, neon eighties.

176

:

Dynae: And we're like, go for it.

177

:

She liked that idea.

178

:

Matt: And I think that'll be dope.

179

:

So currently I'm in the

process of changing Sheldon,

180

:

um, our front door skeleton.

181

:

Dynae: Which hopefully we get done

because it's supposed to rain for

182

:

the next like four days, which sucks.

183

:

But you know, we'll see

what happens by Halloween.

184

:

If not, he'll be nice

and fancy for next year.

185

:

Matt: Is that like that?

186

:

Getting all fat and sassy.

187

:

Dynae: Yeah, exactly.

188

:

Only it's a skeleton.

189

:

Matt: Indeed.

190

:

But you know, it's just like a lot of

people with their Christmas trees as well.

191

:

You and I kind of leave our Halloween

stuff out a little bit longer.

192

:

Yeah.

193

:

Like through.

194

:

Dynae: I mean, we put it up.

195

:

Week or two.

196

:

August this year.

197

:

Last week of August.

198

:

Yeah.

199

:

Because Cora's birthday is

the beginning of September.

200

:

So she was like, I want

to go ahead and decorate.

201

:

So we're like, okay.

202

:

Matt: Well, the unfortunate thing

is where we live and probably.

203

:

Whoever's listening to this, where

you live, they start Christmas like

204

:

two weeks before Halloween at Target

and Home Depot and all those places.

205

:

Dynae: Yeah, we have, our whole town

has Christmas stuff out already.

206

:

So, you know.

207

:

Matt: And has for the last month.

208

:

Dynae: We're like, okay, we

have some principle here.

209

:

Let's get through one holiday before

we like go gung ho on another one.

210

:

But.

211

:

Well, and That's an argument everyone has.

212

:

And , at the end of the day.

213

:

Everybody just do what makes you happy.

214

:

Who cares?

215

:

We don't have to have the argument

of when you should decorate and

216

:

when you can't and all of that stuff

217

:

Matt: That's why people

come to this new podcast.

218

:

It's the hard hitting issues.

219

:

Dynae: Yeah, like who

cares when you decorate?

220

:

Yeah You want to leave your Halloween

stuff up all year go for it.

221

:

Matt: I want to interview neighbor

versus neighbor Fighting battles of

222

:

like, take your decorations down.

223

:

Dynae: We could do that sometime.

224

:

Maybe during trick or treating, we'll just

go and interview some of our neighbors.

225

:

Matt: Just interview the

neighbors for some reason?

226

:

Dynae: They'll be like, what the?

227

:

Matt: How do you feel about

having Halloween decorations

228

:

out until Thanksgiving?

229

:

Dynae: Oh, we live in, we have a

homeowner's association, so they'll

230

:

probably be mad about that or some crap.

231

:

Matt: That's true.

232

:

Dynae: Anyway.

233

:

Matt: Like, listen, get the

dead bodies out of your trees.

234

:

It's Thanksgiving.

235

:

Dynae: It's over.

236

:

So, yes, the other thing we wanted

to start with this episode is getting

237

:

into our movie review kind of stuff.

238

:

Matt: Ooh, nice.

239

:

Dynae: Because you talked about

a little bit about the trick

240

:

or treating, the family time we

like to spend together and stuff.

241

:

Yep.

242

:

And a couple of the other things

that we really like are movies.

243

:

Mm hmm.

244

:

The scary movies and Halloween y movies.

245

:

Yeah.

246

:

Um, and also, but let's come

back to that because I did want

247

:

to talk about, Haunted houses.

248

:

Matt: Yes.

249

:

A little bit.

250

:

I do see that in your notes.

251

:

Dynae: Because that is one of the,

just, quintessential growing up.

252

:

Yeah.

253

:

We were either, you know, from elementary

to junior high, our town always put on

254

:

a fall festival and there was always

a school sponsored haunted house.

255

:

Yes.

256

:

The different high school clubs

and stuff would put them on.

257

:

Matt: Whether it be FBLA or the

band or any of that type of stuff.

258

:

Dynae: So we were either always

either working in them or going and

259

:

participating and like going through them.

260

:

Correct.

261

:

Correct.

262

:

Which you...

263

:

Never liked going through.

264

:

Matt: I was always scared as a little kid.

265

:

I kind of talked about it in a recent

YouTube video that Camryn and I did.

266

:

Where I walked in on my parents, what

if I just stopped right there as a

267

:

horror thing, I walked in on my parents,

268

:

let me finish that sentence, I walked

in on my parents watching pet cemetery.

269

:

Yes.

270

:

And so I kind of, you know, peeked

around the couch because as a little

271

:

kid, you're always going, Oh, I

wonder what mom and dad are watching.

272

:

And there was a part where the

sister of the lady was dying.

273

:

I still, for some reason, have in my brain

where I say she died choking on a chicken

274

:

bone, like you could see it in her neck.

275

:

We recently watched it.

276

:

And I don't recall any chicken bone.

277

:

That part did not happen, but

somehow it scarred me enough

278

:

that I had made that in my brain.

279

:

Yeah.

280

:

And so I still, that's all I can see is

her choking on a chicken bone because

281

:

my brain had developed it into that.

282

:

Anyway, long story short, I walked in

on that too young, scared me to death.

283

:

Dynae: And so from there you didn't

really, like, scary anything?

284

:

Right.

285

:

So haunted houses were out?

286

:

Yes.

287

:

Gotcha.

288

:

Matt: I saw that and then I saw a part

where, , isn't there a part, is it Pet

289

:

Sematary 1 or 2 Maybe they were watching

both and I came back in on the, man,

290

:

and my parents just, Mom if you're

listening, why did you do this to me?

291

:

Dynae: It's always the parents fault.

292

:

Matt: But isn't there a part where

like there's a guy on an operating

293

:

table and his face is all busted up

and you think he's dead and then the

294

:

guy goes in but then he like wakes up.

295

:

Dynae: and the second one, Honestly.

296

:

Matt: Gotcha.

297

:

Dynae: So yeah, there

is a scene like that.

298

:

Matt: And I still remember my dreams.

299

:

Which is funny, we talked about

that in the first episode.

300

:

Dynae: Here we go with dreams again.

301

:

Matt: We should have a

dream person on here.

302

:

But I can

303

:

Dynae: Let's find that.

304

:

Matt: I can see the dream in my

head now that I had as a child.

305

:

Dynae: Yeah, that's how impactful it was.

306

:

Matt: Yes.

307

:

Dynae: Gotcha.

308

:

Matt: So I was in the basement of

grandmama and granddad's house,

309

:

and like Darin and a friend were

playing Nintendo Super Mario.

310

:

Dynae: Darin is his uncle by anyone that

311

:

Matt: my uncle, yes, um, who also

should be listening, and if not

312

:

Dynae: Get on that.

313

:

Matt: Yeah.

314

:

What are you doing, Darin?

315

:

What are you doing with your life?

316

:

Other than teaching young minds how to

cook and Create culinary masterpieces.

317

:

Dynae: Yep.

318

:

Matt: He's the culinary

teacher at our high school.

319

:

Anywho, so, and this wasn't

even real, it's just a dream.

320

:

He was down there playing Mario

Brothers and I was trying to run

321

:

up the stairs because that guy with

the busted up face was chasing me.

322

:

And then other people that looked

like him were kind of coming out

323

:

of the ground in the basement.

324

:

And every time I went up a stair,

my foot sunk in the next step, and

325

:

I just could, like, tar, and then

they were all gaining on me, and, um.

326

:

You have quite the imagination.

327

:

Yeah.

328

:

You're, you're traumatized.

329

:

I am.

330

:

Reading this right now.

331

:

So anyway.

332

:

Maybe that's why.

333

:

So that dream is why you don't

want to go to haunted houses?

334

:

That dream, seeing that movie, that's

why I didn't when I was younger.

335

:

Okay.

336

:

Okay.

337

:

Similar thing to you.

338

:

Um, also when there's loud, scary sounds

and everybody always has a chainsaw.

339

:

Yeah.

340

:

At a haunted house.

341

:

And you're a big chainsaw fan.

342

:

Obviously.

343

:

I do not like

344

:

chainsaws.

345

:

I don't really even know why.

346

:

I don't know what that is or

where that comes from exactly.

347

:

But I think it's just the

loud, startling, you know.

348

:

It is.

349

:

It's just an intimidating sound.

350

:

And they use it in horror movies.

351

:

Yeah.

352

:

For sure.

353

:

Like being cut up by a chainsaw is that.

354

:

You know, but yeah, so, but that

changed your mind on haunted houses.

355

:

Yes, but let's go into

still another story.

356

:

My first haunted house I never would

go through because I was too scared.

357

:

My dad was one of the heads of

the FBLA club in our high school.

358

:

Future business leaders of America.

359

:

The future business leaders of America.

360

:

And so they put on a haunted

house every year and one year

361

:

they rented out, where was

362

:

that?

363

:

It was like the old

bank downtown, I think.

364

:

Well,

365

:

that one was cool.

366

:

Yeah.

367

:

Because that one was.

368

:

indoors.

369

:

Oh, there was another one.

370

:

And there was another one

that was like, yeah, outdoor.

371

:

Yeah.

372

:

Like a warehouse outside, but it

was enclosed if that makes sense.

373

:

So that one was really cool.

374

:

So they set up just different areas

and, , they were trying to find somebody.

375

:

They brought the pole vault mats

in and there was a section where

376

:

they come around this corner.

377

:

They didn't really know

what to do with it.

378

:

They had a mat there.

379

:

So they wanted somebody to just like fall

and scream and land on the mat and die.

380

:

And I was maybe, is this

your first acting gig?

381

:

I probably was.

382

:

Well, you know what I mean?

383

:

I kind of, uh, every family

get together with some sort of

384

:

dance monkey in my direction.

385

:

Anyway, speaking of other trauma

of why I am the way I today,

386

:

that sounded really weird.

387

:

Why

388

:

you are the way you are.

389

:

That's why you're here.

390

:

That's why you're here to help me today.

391

:

Yep.

392

:

So anyway, all of these high

school kids kept trying it.

393

:

I was maybe 10, 12

somewhere in that age range.

394

:

And then like Cora, I can't even

imagine now thinking about that.

395

:

And it was probably 20 feet high jumping

down onto a pole vault mat on the ground.

396

:

And just falling and dying.

397

:

And so just being a daredevil, I

was like, Hey dad, can I do this?

398

:

And he's like, yeah.

399

:

So I did a flip.

400

:

And landed on my back and screamed and

then all the high school kids are like

401

:

he's in yep So then I recruited a little

mini So then I got the job is like, you

402

:

know, the kid that dies from the rafters I

403

:

guess I always like enjoyed

working in them, too Doing the

404

:

makeup and yeah, it's kind of that

405

:

theater kid background because we

were both in band as well and band

406

:

every year had a haunted house and

407

:

we actually like our

fundraisers for school.

408

:

That's what we did instead of all

the like, Cora, just the other day we

409

:

were selling cards like coupon cards.

410

:

We did fun stuff like fall festivals.

411

:

Yeah.

412

:

So

413

:

do you sell cookie dough?

414

:

No, we scare the living crap out

of people, but you're like, all

415

:

right.

416

:

Yeah.

417

:

I wish they would bring that back on us.

418

:

It's probably a lot of liability

issues now that I think about it

419

:

back then that we probably shouldn't

420

:

have done.

421

:

But we had an old part of our high

school that we called the armory.

422

:

Well,

423

:

it was an old military armory.

424

:

That's

425

:

probably a whole section of that that

had a basement and like a really

426

:

creepy area and that's where the band

had their haunted house every year.

427

:

And so we were part of that.

428

:

I remember being in several of those

where I'd hide in the walls and come

429

:

out with a little skill saw or something.

430

:

It was always

431

:

more fun working in them than

going through them, in all honesty.

432

:

So that was our childhood

experiences with haunted houses.

433

:

And then we got older.

434

:

Maybe that's why we

435

:

love all this stuff today.

436

:

Because

437

:

it scared us when we were little

and now we're just kind of like.

438

:

Why were we so scared?

439

:

Which we're going to get into when

we talk about the movie section.

440

:

You're

441

:

always fascinated with stuff

that scares you, I think.

442

:

Yeah, it's one of those things.

443

:

Like a love hate relationship.

444

:

Trying to figure out why, because

it's that adrenaline rush too, that's

445

:

almost like a dopamine rush too.

446

:

That's true.

447

:

You know, there's psychology

behind all of that.

448

:

Like you feel like you're going to

die, so you get that adrenaline,

449

:

but you know you're safe.

450

:

I got you.

451

:

Yeah.

452

:

So what you're talking about

is, how long ago was that?

453

:

Did you look it up?

454

:

Nine years ago.

455

:

Nine years, holy crap.

456

:

Time

457

:

moves on hyperspeed once you get

past age 30, I feel like, honestly.

458

:

Well, Dynae and I, one of our

favorite trips we ever took

459

:

together, we left the kids at home.

460

:

Solo trips, yeah.

461

:

Maybe I should just stop there.

462

:

Our favorite trip we took,

we didn't bring the kids.

463

:

Any parent can relate, you

464

:

know.

465

:

That's true.

466

:

But we went to Universal Studios and

we'd never been to Universal Studios and

467

:

we specifically went during Halloween

horror nights Yeah So we could do the

468

:

part during the day and the horror

nights at night and walk around and

469

:

experience all of that which you Were

470

:

very nervous about doing honestly Well,

471

:

it's because I had all of that past

issues and I thought am I gonna

472

:

be able to handle this Even though

473

:

I'm like you were afraid you were

going to punch somebody if they

474

:

came at you too much or something.

475

:

I

476

:

think that might be it.

477

:

My fear response is very fight heavy.

478

:

Yeah.

479

:

And I'd never want to hurt somebody

knowing they're just an actor.

480

:

Yeah, that they're just an actor.

481

:

But luckily for me, gaining

that maturity, obviously.

482

:

Now I'm like, Oh, I'm

not going to punch you.

483

:

We did it.

484

:

And that was

485

:

honestly so fun.

486

:

It was a lot of fun.

487

:

The year we went, , it was

silent Hill, walking dead.

488

:

And what was the other one?

489

:

I can't remember.

490

:

It was another movie that had just

491

:

come out.

492

:

I can't remember.

493

:

We waited in line for hours and hours.

494

:

to get in, but it was so fun.

495

:

Yeah.

496

:

I was, I was glad we went

during that time of year.

497

:

And that's one of those things

now when our kids get older,

498

:

we want to take them all.

499

:

Our family is really, like

we said, Halloween is super

500

:

fun for everybody for sure.

501

:

And now that the kids are gotten

older, our youngest is just 10.

502

:

She's not into the scary stuff yet.

503

:

She likes Spooky stuff like Hocus

Pocus, you know, we're still in

504

:

that realm with her, but the other

two started to watch more of the

505

:

horror movies and stuff like that.

506

:

We watched growing up.

507

:

They just watched Silence of the Lambs,

508

:

their first horror movies that they

really, well, maybe not first ever.

509

:

It

510

:

was Chloe's.

511

:

Was it?

512

:

They watched it.

513

:

The remake.

514

:

The new remake.

515

:

Yeah.

516

:

It one and two.

517

:

Chloe was like.

518

:

11 or 12 and they loved it.

519

:

Yeah, so it's still like one of her

favorite movies, which is hilarious

520

:

because she's a super sweet little,

you know, unsuspecting child.

521

:

If anybody has seen.

522

:

the TV show Wednesday.

523

:

Yes.

524

:

There's Wednesday and

then there's her roommate.

525

:

Chloe is actually both of them.

526

:

Somehow.

527

:

But 90 percent of the time she presents

as the real flowerly, colorful, neon.

528

:

Yeah, but she's got a dark side.

529

:

Yeah, and then every once in

a while she'll come out with a

530

:

joke and I'm like, oh my gosh.

531

:

Maybe I should lock her

in her room tonight.

532

:

This is creepy.

533

:

Yeah, so our kids are funny.

534

:

So yeah, they have started at the older

to definitely started getting into

535

:

more of the scary movies and stuff,

which is fun watching them with him.

536

:

Well, when they don't talk a lot, I

don't know if everyone else can relate

537

:

to that, but we have kids when they get

nervous, they talk a lot and you can't

538

:

watch a movie you haven't seen with

539

:

them.

540

:

Well, and we had to come up with stuff

because I know you don't have this on

541

:

your notes, but I mean, when we went

through COVID, everybody had issues.

542

:

You know, around the world,

so we couldn't go anywhere.

543

:

We had an unfinished basement.

544

:

And so as an entertainer, I tried to

think what would be fun for the kids.

545

:

So I

546

:

put Yeah, it was that crazy time.

547

:

Remember when we all didn't go trick

or treating, we were all afraid we

548

:

were going to get sick from stuff.

549

:

And yeah, it was just,

550

:

whoa.

551

:

Which I'm glad we didn't, because

we could have got sick from stuff.

552

:

So we stayed home.

553

:

I had a bunch of glow wrist straps and

glow sticks and all kinds of stuff.

554

:

And so Basically our

basement was unfinished.

555

:

You could see through all of the

556

:

walls.

557

:

Cause you know, that's creepy

already, you know, unfinished

558

:

basements are always creepy.

559

:

So I

560

:

brought down a speaker that I put

down on top of a board and I cranked

561

:

up, you know, the scary, like

562

:

scary haunted house.

563

:

So we made our own haunted house in the

564

:

basement basically.

565

:

Well, first it was the glow sticks

and then second, it was me hiding in

566

:

different areas that they didn't know

where I was going to be to scare them.

567

:

And my favorite one was probably the last

one I hit in the very back corner and

568

:

did the thing where I ran on all fours.

569

:

Yeah, which Chloe

570

:

does excellently now.

571

:

Oh my goodness.

572

:

She's creepy, man.

573

:

Yeah, I don't wanna, I don't wanna see

her in real life doing it, let alone

574

:

in, she'd be perfect in a haunted house.

575

:

Yeah, she

576

:

would, she would.

577

:

Yeah.

578

:

It would be so much fun.

579

:

Yeah, cause she

580

:

is so scary looking.

581

:

You're so mean to Chloe.

582

:

I know.

583

:

Well, Chloe.

584

:

She's beautiful, but she

makes some scary faces.

585

:

That's why Chloe is so dark, I think.

586

:

Because Chloe and I are really good.

587

:

at ripping each other.

588

:

Just that real kind of dry, I gotcha.

589

:

You roast each other a lot.

590

:

Yeah.

591

:

And then she'll get me right back.

592

:

But yeah, so that was super fun.

593

:

So we, we did that like

two years in a row because.

594

:

You know, COVID lasted longer than

we all thought it was going to.

595

:

Anyway, but it was fun.

596

:

It was a super fun memory

that I forgot about.

597

:

You don't even have it on your notes.

598

:

And I was like, Oh yeah,

I should talk about that.

599

:

Yeah.

600

:

Um, Cora was still too young.

601

:

She was scared to come down

to the basement because

602

:

she could hear the sounds.

603

:

So we got to where she would do it.

604

:

If we Turned off the speaker,

and obviously I didn't hide.

605

:

Yeah.

606

:

You know, she would come down

and try to find the glow sticks.

607

:

Yeah, yeah.

608

:

And, you know, we're not in this

to just terrorize our children.

609

:

No, we don't want to

do what was done to us.

610

:

Yes, we want, we want very fond

memories, not chicken bone in the throat.

611

:

Not trauma.

612

:

Yeah.

613

:

That's a fine line as a parent.

614

:

It's like, how can you give

your kids memories without the

615

:

trauma?

616

:

That's something I think would

be fascinating to talk about in

617

:

a future episode, because I think

about this, honestly, a lot.

618

:

There's a handful of

things where I remember.

619

:

These are the four or five times my

parents got really mad and I remember

620

:

them screaming or throwing something

Or the other way around too, you know,

621

:

like these are the amazing memories.

622

:

So I'm always curious, and that's why

I try to do these fun things with them.

623

:

Like what our kids are going to

remember when they're our age.

624

:

Yeah, I'm always curious to be like,

will they remember all the times

625

:

that I got mad and yelled at them?

626

:

Or will they remember all the fun

things that we created and made up?

627

:

And we're a very creative family.

628

:

So a lot of times around the dinner

table, we'll just make up stories

629

:

and do like our own little miniature

versions of dungeons and dragons and

630

:

just go through stories and go, Hey,

what would you do in this situation?

631

:

And

632

:

Well, and as a parent, you

hope it's obviously, you always

633

:

hope that it's more good.

634

:

Stories than the bad stories,

but you know, that's unavoidable.

635

:

I feel like to, to a point, it's just

life is messy and life is crazy sometimes.

636

:

However, I think we must be doing

something right because we just did

637

:

parent teacher conferences and our

youngest Cora is 10 and her teacher

638

:

gave a bunch of super glowing reviews

about how creative her brain is.

639

:

And she can come up with stories and a lot

of kids struggle with the comprehension.

640

:

It's not as much fun to read because yeah.

641

:

But we, we definitely have lots

of imagination in our house.

642

:

Yeah,

643

:

but getting back to what we were

actually talking about, sorry, we

644

:

do go off on these tangents a lot.

645

:

So that's a big reason

why we like spooky season.

646

:

But let's get into some of

the movie reviews because we

647

:

were talking about childhood.

648

:

And another thing that we wanted to talk

about was going back and re watching

649

:

some of the scary movies, quote unquote,

from when we were kids that we never

650

:

watched because we were too afraid

651

:

to.

652

:

Yeah, we realized a lot of

the horror movie classics.

653

:

Like the cult classics.

654

:

Yeah, like, uh, Nightmare on Elm Street.

655

:

Friday the 13th, Halloween.

656

:

Yeah, because we were

657

:

little kids in the 80s and then tweens

and teenagers in through the 90s.

658

:

So it's one of those where that

was a big, huge time for horror,

659

:

horror movies.

660

:

So we were more in the Final Destination,

Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer.

661

:

Yeah, that era.

662

:

That was our era.

663

:

That we were kind of in the prime.

664

:

Yeah.

665

:

So we've been, and just a

warning, spoiler alerts.

666

:

We'll probably talk about these movies if

you haven't seen them like us from now.

667

:

I don't think we're going to give too much

away, but just so you know, spoiler alert.

668

:

Even if we do spoil something,

sometimes it's worth going back

669

:

to watch and go, wow, that was

just as bad as they explained.

670

:

Dynae: Because what we have learned,

and this goes for all movies, honestly,

671

:

that when we were growing up, we've gone

back and rewatched some with our kids.

672

:

And it's like, that did not hold up.

673

:

Yep.

674

:

Horror movies are the same way.

675

:

Yep.

676

:

In all honesty.

677

:

So lately we decided to do this thing

and we've been going back and re watching

678

:

those movies like Nightmare on Elm Street.

679

:

Yep.

680

:

We never watched the originals.

681

:

Never watched Halloween

or Friday the 13th.

682

:

Yep.

683

:

Alien.

684

:

I never saw Alien so we went back and

watched that one and um, one more.

685

:

Texas Chainsaw.

686

:

Yes.

687

:

Texas Chainsaw, which I will say

the remake came out when we were

688

:

teenage college age somewhere

in there And it was good and

689

:

Matt: frightening.

690

:

That one was definitely

scary in comparison.

691

:

The old one very weird Let me just

say right off the bat before we go

692

:

into any in depth stuff the major

consistency between all of the old

693

:

horror movies is Lots of teenagers die.

694

:

Mm hmm.

695

:

And most of the acting

is very questionable.

696

:

Dynae: Yes Cuz I was going back and I

was like man I didn't realize all these

697

:

actors were in these movies like Johnny

Depp and Kevin Bacon and you know All

698

:

of these really famous actors got their

start in some of these horror movies,

699

:

which I didn't realize back then and

it's like Wow, you got a lot better.

700

:

Or is it the directing?

701

:

You never know.

702

:

That's true.

703

:

That might be the case.

704

:

Because that's been the funny thing.

705

:

Like, when we were kids, it feels

like horror movies were very just

706

:

along that campy cult classic

stuff where special effects hadn't

707

:

come very far yet and everything

was obviously very fake looking.

708

:

But also, back then, it

was new for them, you know?

709

:

That's true.

710

:

And so it was terrifying.

711

:

But when you...

712

:

If you're a horror fan and you start with

a progression of like, let's say movies

713

:

that were made in the 70s up through now.

714

:

Yeah.

715

:

It's unbelievably different.

716

:

Oh, for sure.

717

:

And so we went back and watched the Evil

Dead series because I'd never seen them.

718

:

So there's definitely the

old Sam Raimi kind of style.

719

:

You know, which are campy and fun, but

720

:

Matt: I've always been a big,

big fan of, of those movies.

721

:

You've never been as big a fan.

722

:

And I

723

:

Dynae: don't know why I

just never watched them.

724

:

Matt: Well, and I think it also

progressed because by the time you

725

:

get to army of darkness, you have evil

dead one evil dead to army of darkness.

726

:

It's basically a progression

from gore scary to.

727

:

Gore scary, but also kind of funny.

728

:

Yeah.

729

:

And then it's basically a horror comedy.

730

:

By the

731

:

Dynae: end of that.

732

:

By the Army of Darkness.

733

:

But then they

734

:

Matt: remade them recently.

735

:

But then they remade Evil Dead 2013.

736

:

And then they just recently

did Evil Dead Rise.

737

:

And those are.

738

:

Woo.

739

:

Yes.

740

:

Dynae: And I love them.

741

:

I watched them.

742

:

Like, I was surprised.

743

:

Like, I was never a huge horror fan.

744

:

I mean, I did watch, you know,

like, Scream is one of my favorite

745

:

movies, even though it's a

slasher film and stuff like that.

746

:

But I think it was the comedy

mixed in with it that I enjoyed.

747

:

So I enjoyed those kind of movies.

748

:

Movies like Saw or Hostel or anything

like that are also, like, not my jam.

749

:

Oh, no.

750

:

Like the torture porn kind of stuff.

751

:

For sure.

752

:

That's just gross to be gross.

753

:

I do not like any of those type of movies.

754

:

Yeah.

755

:

Um, so I was questionable about Evil Dead

because you kind of warned me about them.

756

:

But I also feel like it's one

of those where it's so over the

757

:

top that it is almost comical.

758

:

That's true.

759

:

You know, there are definitely

parts that I just didn't watch.

760

:

My trick is I take off my glasses.

761

:

Because you're

762

:

Matt: blind.

763

:

Because I'm legally blind.

764

:

So even if we're watching on my computer

and we're two and a half feet away

765

:

from it You can take your glasses off

and be like, I can't see anything.

766

:

Cause my

767

:

Dynae: thing is, is I do have

a very vivid imagination.

768

:

I do dream about things

and stuff like that.

769

:

And there are certain things

that I just don't want to

770

:

Matt: see.

771

:

But it's fun on those old movies, because

when somebody's head gets like ripped open

772

:

or something, sometimes you watch it and

you go, Hmm, how does that cream corn?

773

:

Yeah.

774

:

What are they using?

775

:

Dynae: But yeah, we do watch

behind the scenes stuff quite

776

:

a bit, but it is funny now.

777

:

It's like, Oh, I see how they

did that, you know, but now

778

:

with the special effects, it's

just like on a whole new level.

779

:

So, and I will say that movies back

then obviously were reliant only on

780

:

the shock and the grossness factor.

781

:

That's true.

782

:

Um.

783

:

And not on the storylines and

acting, like you said, so alien

784

:

was the first one where there was

actually good acting for direction.

785

:

I

786

:

Matt: feel like there was a definitive

switch from all the other ones

787

:

we had watched where we're like,

Whoa, there's actually, this is a

788

:

Dynae: legitimate movie.

789

:

So it makes sense.

790

:

That's one of his early films.

791

:

He's a great director, but it's one

of those things where it's like,

792

:

you could definitely feel like you

can tell what they were focusing on.

793

:

And now in horror films, it

is very much about the story.

794

:

And like some of the more recent ones that

we have seen that have been excellent.

795

:

That's like, whoa, that came out of

nowhere, you know, was well, well,

796

:

some of your favorite ones lately, uh,

797

:

Matt: recent.

798

:

Well, I love the conjuring series.

799

:

Yeah.

800

:

Because those are terrifying, but yet not

in the disgusting gross out way in a lot.

801

:

Yeah, it's just more like that

802

:

Dynae: sense of dread.

803

:

Speaking of that's one of

Chloe's favorite series as well.

804

:

The conjuring series.

805

:

Yeah, it's great.

806

:

And there are some gross parts in there,

but they're relying much more on that.

807

:

and the, you know, acting

and directing story.

808

:

Some of the oddballs that have been out

there, which we're not really going to

809

:

give spoilers about because I feel like

they're even better when you go in blind

810

:

and don't really know anything about it.

811

:

So

812

:

Matt: should we give them two?

813

:

Because I've got two

on the top of my head.

814

:

And I think they're the same ones.

815

:

So these are ones you do not

want to watch a trailer or

816

:

anything or read anything about.

817

:

Just go in blind.

818

:

Go in blind.

819

:

And just have your mind blown

because they do not go the

820

:

direction you think they will go.

821

:

And that is Barbarian.

822

:

And malignant.

823

:

Yes.

824

:

It's so

825

:

Dynae: out there.

826

:

It's so insane.

827

:

I never saw what was going,

what was gonna happen.

828

:

Yeah.

829

:

And we're pretty good about that.

830

:

We're pretty good about, especially

me, I'm like, I can pick up on patterns

831

:

and recognize what the storyline's

gonna be pretty quick, usually.

832

:

Matt: Well, and I think that's

why they did such a good job in

833

:

that movie, because they're like,

hey, look over here at this hand.

834

:

Yeah, we're gonna,

835

:

Dynae: we're gonna lead

you down this road, but.

836

:

Matt: They do that little thing

where they tap you on the shoulder

837

:

on the other side and then they kind

of look away and you're going, who

838

:

Dynae: was that?

839

:

So yeah, those are definitely

two that I'd say go in without

840

:

knowing anything about it.

841

:

It'll pay off.

842

:

And then

843

:

Matt: one of our favorite genres

though is the horror comedy,

844

:

obviously the Shaun of the Dead's.

845

:

The stuff like that, that's still

scary, spooky, Halloween, zombies,

846

:

whatever, you know, could be vampires.

847

:

Dynae: Well, and that's why I like Scream.

848

:

That's why I thought I, you know, it was

one of my favorites when I was younger,

849

:

Matt: too.

850

:

Another one I'm gonna give

out to the audience that is

851

:

my favorite horror comedy.

852

:

Um, don't read anything about it.

853

:

Just go in.

854

:

Just go in because the way that they kind

of turned the horror trope on its head for

855

:

this movie was really fun and hilarious.

856

:

And also there's some disgustingness

because it's shock value.

857

:

You'll know why when you see

858

:

Dynae: it.

859

:

It's kind of along the evil dead line

that it's just so over the top that

860

:

it's comical though at the same time.

861

:

So

862

:

Matt: that one's called

Tucker and Dale versus evil.

863

:

And you got to watch that

cause it's one of my favorites.

864

:

And I

865

:

Dynae: think over the years, especially

recent years, I've gotten a lot better

866

:

about watching scary movies cause there

for a while there were certain ones

867

:

that I'm just like, I'm not watching.

868

:

Um, you made me rewatch candy

man cause for some reason that

869

:

one scared the bejesus out of me.

870

:

I don't really,

871

:

Matt: I didn't really remember it.

872

:

That's why I wanted to watch it again.

873

:

Um, just like when we

talked about Pet Sematary.

874

:

Dynae: By the way, I feel like

those two, the older ones are,

875

:

they still hold up pretty well.

876

:

They're still pretty scary.

877

:

Like if our oldest watched them,

I feel like they would enjoy them

878

:

because they're still like, oh.

879

:

Matt: I think in comparison to

some of the stuff they've seen now.

880

:

Dynae: Which they enjoyed

Silence of the Lambs, you know.

881

:

And that one's got some

quite gruesome content.

882

:

Um, our oldest has seen seven.

883

:

Put the lotion in the basket.

884

:

Our oldest has seen seven.

885

:

Those obvious questionable scenes

in it, though, that I don't

886

:

think Chloe will appreciate.

887

:

So we've kind of, we give them, we

definitely watch all the movies first.

888

:

We don't just let them go in blind.

889

:

Oh, for sure.

890

:

So we can give them trigger warnings.

891

:

Yeah.

892

:

And just be like, just be prepared.

893

:

Matt: Well, in Seven, we went in

and we let them know like, hey,

894

:

this is more, So if it was real.

895

:

Yeah.

896

:

So

897

:

Dynae: that one, obviously that

was a great movie when we were

898

:

younger too, that came out.

899

:

That was part of one of the

haunted houses that we did.

900

:

What's in the box.

901

:

Yeah.

902

:

Yeah.

903

:

So that's one of those things.

904

:

It's been fun going back and

revisiting a lot of these movies and

905

:

just, we were kind of telling the

kids, it's like, well, these aren't.

906

:

We did go back and watch

recently, Friday the 13th, and

907

:

I'm like, why was this so scary?

908

:

But I was, it may be a similar thing.

909

:

I walked in on one when my older sisters

were watching it when I was younger.

910

:

And I'm like, Oh, I can't do that.

911

:

Cause that was always a thing in

our house is my older siblings would

912

:

watch the scary movies with my dad.

913

:

And obviously my mom is

scared of everything.

914

:

So she would never participate.

915

:

That is very true.

916

:

So I would always be in the other

room with her when they did that.

917

:

So it was kind of like their bonding

time, but also like I knew I can't.

918

:

I can't go out anywhere or I'll

see something I don't want to see.

919

:

Well,

920

:

Matt: your mom is famously afraid of

the flying monkeys from the wizard.

921

:

Yeah, there's some trauma there.

922

:

And so anything past that

level, we know she can't do it.

923

:

Yeah.

924

:

Stay in.

925

:

So, um, Your mom will walk in and

she's like, what are you guys watching?

926

:

Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

927

:

I'm out.

928

:

Dynae: No, she loves that movie.

929

:

That's true, she does.

930

:

She told Cora to watch it, which

Cora did, and it was pretty funny.

931

:

Yeah.

932

:

But anyway, it's the funny

things that your family watches.

933

:

So we did go back and watch

Nightmare on Elm Street.

934

:

I didn't feel like it was scary at all.

935

:

Yeah, because they

didn't explain anything.

936

:

And now I'm used to seeing stories

and storylines in the scary movies.

937

:

So going back then, it was just like,

they just plopped you in the middle of the

938

:

action and it's like, who is this person?

939

:

Why is he doing this?

940

:

It's, and I have trouble with

movies that give no explanations of

941

:

Matt: what's going on.

942

:

Well, and here's another thing

I'm going to put this right here.

943

:

Spoiler.

944

:

So if you want to click ahead like

30 seconds past what I'm talking

945

:

about, or two minutes, then that

way you won't ruin anything.

946

:

If you haven't seen them.

947

:

30 seconds to two minutes,

how long are we going to talk?

948

:

Oh, I could go all day, baby.

949

:

Dynae: I know when we talk about movies.

950

:

Matt: So basically the funny thing about

those when you go back and watch them.

951

:

The original Friday the 13th,

um, Nightmare on Elm Street.

952

:

Those characters are not even

who they are known for now.

953

:

Yeah.

954

:

Like, Freddy is known for being

a very campy, making a lot

955

:

of bad puns and saying stuff.

956

:

In the first movie, he wasn't.

957

:

It was trying to be scary.

958

:

In the first Friday the

13th, major spoiler.

959

:

Pause, pause, pause.

960

:

Jason's not even in it.

961

:

Yeah.

962

:

So that's a crazy part.

963

:

He's not the killer.

964

:

I know.

965

:

Yeah.

966

:

So you have all these, uh, origin

stories that are not even fully

967

:

fleshed out and developed yet.

968

:

Yeah.

969

:

Yeah.

970

:

Which is kind of an interesting

971

:

Dynae: thing to see those first ones.

972

:

Well, and that makes sense why

there's so many of them because they

973

:

probably along the way started to

develop it more and stuff like that.

974

:

To be fair, we haven't watched.

975

:

I think I have seen like

a more recent Freddy.

976

:

That we watched Freddie

versus Jason or something.

977

:

I don't really remember it at all.

978

:

Which has

979

:

Matt: also gone into that ludicrous kind

of partially funny, you know, cause at

980

:

one point, Jason's in his dreams and he

sees, uh, like a naked girl in a sleeping

981

:

bag, you know, when he goes over and then

just zips her up and, and picks her up and

982

:

then just like start swinging her into a

tree, like a baseball bat with the bag.

983

:

So it got to the point where

things just go so over the top

984

:

that it's comical, but you're also

going, Oh, did you see that kill?

985

:

Dynae: Which is hilarious.

986

:

Yeah.

987

:

But again, there's psychology here that we

should probably dig into more with some of

988

:

Matt: that stuff.

989

:

Well, if you think about that though,

everyone really loves the horror movies,

990

:

but what is today's number one thing?

991

:

True crime.

992

:

True crime, murder podcasts,

documentaries on Netflix.

993

:

Dynae: And it's one of those things

that gets really popular with women,

994

:

I feel like, because it's almost like

a education, in a way, what not to do.

995

:

I mean, for me particularly, and I know

a lot of other women that listen to those

996

:

kinds of podcasts or the documentaries

and stuff like that, it's about,

997

:

okay, now I can recognize red flags.

998

:

More than just don't leave your

windows and doors unlocked, don't

999

:

sleep downstairs, all these other

:

00:36:44,323 --> 00:36:44,523

Matt: things.

:

00:36:44,543 --> 00:36:47,143

The old horror movies,

The Red Flags, were...

:

00:36:48,628 --> 00:36:53,748

on fire in your face, red flags that the

women are like, should I go in this house?

:

00:36:53,848 --> 00:36:54,118

And in

:

00:36:54,118 --> 00:36:58,138

Dynae: all honesty, that's why movies

like silence of the lambs, I feel like

:

00:36:58,138 --> 00:37:03,208

candy man and some of these others still

hold up because it is more well, seven,

:

00:37:03,228 --> 00:37:06,588

it's more the realism type stuff, right?

:

00:37:06,588 --> 00:37:10,188

Cause those are based on, well,

not candy man so much, but the

:

00:37:10,188 --> 00:37:11,518

other ones are based on real.

:

00:37:11,703 --> 00:37:13,523

Kind of true crime stories.

:

00:37:13,633 --> 00:37:17,803

So, I think that's what makes it more

scary because it's based in reality.

:

00:37:17,983 --> 00:37:21,813

Matt: But I think that's also why today's

horror movies are so much more effective.

:

00:37:22,023 --> 00:37:22,283

Mm hmm.

:

00:37:22,353 --> 00:37:26,583

Because, I'm not saying it to degrade

any of the old ones, but the new

:

00:37:26,583 --> 00:37:28,383

horror movies are just smarter.

:

00:37:28,538 --> 00:37:28,888

Yeah.

:

00:37:28,968 --> 00:37:30,208

Like they're more well thought out.

:

00:37:30,218 --> 00:37:33,568

They're more, they know

that you know the tropes.

:

00:37:33,568 --> 00:37:36,698

And so they're trying to think, how do

we, how do we twist these, avoid the

:

00:37:36,698 --> 00:37:39,558

tropes, but yet still make it terrifying.

:

00:37:39,588 --> 00:37:41,938

Dynae: They completely use

those tropes to make fun of

:

00:37:41,938 --> 00:37:43,698

things like cabin in the woods.

:

00:37:43,768 --> 00:37:45,058

I just watched with Chloe the other

:

00:37:45,058 --> 00:37:45,258

Matt: day.

:

00:37:45,298 --> 00:37:47,028

Cabin in the woods is another great one.

:

00:37:47,038 --> 00:37:48,508

If you've never, which is kind of a

:

00:37:48,898 --> 00:37:51,398

Dynae: horror comedy as well

in a way, because it's so over

:

00:37:51,398 --> 00:37:52,508

the top that it's comical.

:

00:37:52,518 --> 00:37:52,748

Yeah.

:

00:37:52,823 --> 00:37:56,023

And the way that they handle things, but

yeah, that's one that kind of takes a

:

00:37:56,023 --> 00:37:59,093

left turn that you don't necessarily see

coming, even though they're using all the

:

00:37:59,093 --> 00:38:00,903

tropes, they're doing it for a reason.

:

00:38:01,323 --> 00:38:03,483

So that's a fun one if

you haven't seen that one.

:

00:38:03,873 --> 00:38:05,653

And I think Chloe really

enjoyed it as well.

:

00:38:05,693 --> 00:38:05,783

Yeah.

:

00:38:06,503 --> 00:38:09,833

So, but yeah, so we've just been

going back and forth and like, well,

:

00:38:09,843 --> 00:38:14,293

held up what didn't and we've come

to these conclusions that some of

:

00:38:14,293 --> 00:38:17,133

these old ones that we were so scared

to watch when we were growing up.

:

00:38:17,963 --> 00:38:19,643

Really don't hold up at all.

:

00:38:20,133 --> 00:38:23,273

Matt: One of my favorite moments when we

were watching Pet Sematary though, there

:

00:38:23,273 --> 00:38:27,563

was the part where the cat got killed

and they kind of like brought it back.

:

00:38:27,983 --> 00:38:28,993

And he's all mean.

:

00:38:29,063 --> 00:38:34,083

Yeah, and both of our cats were sitting

on the ground, like just watching the

:

00:38:34,083 --> 00:38:35,413

TV going, what the hell is happening?

:

00:38:35,993 --> 00:38:38,543

Dynae: They kept looking back

at us like, why is he so mad?

:

00:38:38,863 --> 00:38:40,643

Matt: Like they could

tell something was wrong.

:

00:38:41,233 --> 00:38:42,723

That was pretty funny, yeah.

:

00:38:42,953 --> 00:38:45,843

What if we just did to our cats

what our parents did to us?

:

00:38:46,233 --> 00:38:46,373

We

:

00:38:46,373 --> 00:38:47,183

Dynae: probably did.

:

00:38:47,413 --> 00:38:47,733

Yeah.

:

00:38:47,943 --> 00:38:49,603

Yeah, we traumatized our kitty cats.

:

00:38:49,883 --> 00:38:50,613

That's so sad.

:

00:38:50,623 --> 00:38:50,843

Or

:

00:38:50,843 --> 00:38:52,583

Matt: they're just stupid cats.

:

00:38:53,583 --> 00:38:54,313

Actually, they're not.

:

00:38:54,373 --> 00:38:58,383

I love our cats more than anything.

:

00:38:59,673 --> 00:38:59,833

You

:

00:38:59,833 --> 00:39:01,083

Dynae: didn't think you'd be a cat person.

:

00:39:01,123 --> 00:39:03,133

Matt: I freaking love cats.

:

00:39:05,013 --> 00:39:05,823

The greatest.

:

00:39:06,188 --> 00:39:09,508

Yeah, I didn't think I would be,

but I think it's also one of those,

:

00:39:09,528 --> 00:39:13,908

my persona, um, I'm so energetic

and in your face and doing all this

:

00:39:13,908 --> 00:39:17,248

stuff on stage that when I get home,

I want to kind of just chill out.

:

00:39:17,748 --> 00:39:23,048

And so cats are, oh man, and cats are

so good at knowing they can be crazy

:

00:39:23,048 --> 00:39:23,528

Dynae: though too.

:

00:39:23,758 --> 00:39:24,308

That's true.

:

00:39:24,328 --> 00:39:26,948

So they're pretty funny and

hilarious at some points as well.

:

00:39:26,948 --> 00:39:27,358

But,

:

00:39:27,548 --> 00:39:30,668

Matt: but you know, when you're sick,

any, anytime the kids are sick, all

:

00:39:30,668 --> 00:39:32,318

three of our cats will go lay on them.

:

00:39:32,563 --> 00:39:33,953

Cats just know.

:

00:39:34,103 --> 00:39:36,953

Dynae: Yeah, they're attuned

to your nervous system.

:

00:39:36,993 --> 00:39:37,163

Yeah,

:

00:39:37,253 --> 00:39:38,163

Matt: I don't know why I went off on cats.

:

00:39:38,163 --> 00:39:39,863

Cats are a horror movie

:

00:39:40,133 --> 00:39:40,283

Dynae: thing though.

:

00:39:40,913 --> 00:39:41,373

Black cats.

:

00:39:41,513 --> 00:39:43,533

Yeah, we were talking about Pet Sematary.

:

00:39:43,583 --> 00:39:43,893

Yes.

:

00:39:44,693 --> 00:39:48,403

Church, Church the Cat, which is pretty

funny when you think about that too.

:

00:39:50,433 --> 00:39:52,793

Which I have not seen the

remakes of Pet Sematary.

:

00:39:52,793 --> 00:39:53,523

You have.

:

00:39:53,603 --> 00:39:54,043

I have.

:

00:39:54,093 --> 00:39:56,503

Um, so I should probably go

back and watch those as well.

:

00:39:56,523 --> 00:39:56,963

Well, and it's

:

00:39:56,963 --> 00:40:01,263

Matt: tough too because we've watched only

the first ones of a lot of these series.

:

00:40:01,283 --> 00:40:01,713

Yeah.

:

00:40:01,753 --> 00:40:03,173

But then you also look at it and you go...

:

00:40:03,433 --> 00:40:05,703

Oh, Nightmare on Elm Street Part 12.

:

00:40:05,883 --> 00:40:06,273

Dynae: Yeah.

:

00:40:06,513 --> 00:40:09,673

Well, like I said, that's why they

probably developed the character and

:

00:40:09,673 --> 00:40:14,113

everything into the myth and persona

that it is through all of the sequels.

:

00:40:14,133 --> 00:40:17,263

Matt: I will tell you one thing, I

hope I don't divide any of our audience

:

00:40:17,263 --> 00:40:19,273

if you are huge horror movie fans.

:

00:40:19,743 --> 00:40:25,803

One of my least favorite movies that I've

ever seen was the first Hellraiser movie.

:

00:40:27,183 --> 00:40:28,363

Cause it was just gross.

:

00:40:28,393 --> 00:40:29,973

Dynae: Well, so I think

that's torture porn

:

00:40:29,973 --> 00:40:30,233

Matt: kind of stuff, right?

:

00:40:30,243 --> 00:40:33,623

It was torture porn, but also the

acting might have been worse than

:

00:40:33,643 --> 00:40:35,323

any of the movies we've seen so far.

:

00:40:35,333 --> 00:40:35,923

Oh, wow.

:

00:40:36,053 --> 00:40:36,753

That's pretty rough.

:

00:40:36,803 --> 00:40:39,643

But I would be curious to go back

and watch it with you just for that.

:

00:40:39,783 --> 00:40:40,493

I don't want to watch

:

00:40:40,493 --> 00:40:41,193

Dynae: anything like that.

:

00:40:41,193 --> 00:40:42,753

That's just gross to be gross though.

:

00:40:42,783 --> 00:40:46,703

Matt: Well, and the funny thing is Pinhead

really isn't just like the other movies.

:

00:40:46,713 --> 00:40:50,093

He's not like a major

feature like you think he is.

:

00:40:50,243 --> 00:40:51,003

Dynae: It's just that.

:

00:40:51,303 --> 00:40:52,963

scary vision of it.

:

00:40:53,273 --> 00:40:56,523

Matt: Somebody in our high school

though did that and they did pinhead

:

00:40:56,623 --> 00:41:00,013

as a mask and put on it looked amazing.

:

00:41:00,013 --> 00:41:00,353

Yeah.

:

00:41:00,613 --> 00:41:03,843

So, but it's kind of like, you

know, the, the fear of the unknown

:

00:41:03,843 --> 00:41:05,623

or you don't know, like jaws.

:

00:41:06,203 --> 00:41:08,213

I think that might be another reason why.

:

00:41:08,553 --> 00:41:09,553

You don't like deep water.

:

00:41:09,563 --> 00:41:11,803

Yes, I wash jaws probably too early.

:

00:41:12,213 --> 00:41:15,753

So I've had a, even to this day it's

hard for me to go swimming in the lake.

:

00:41:16,193 --> 00:41:20,543

And I only do now because the kids aren't

scared and they just jump in off the dock.

:

00:41:20,873 --> 00:41:21,793

You have to be the protective parent.

:

00:41:21,793 --> 00:41:24,973

I have to be dead and I have to be

there and ready for them even though the

:

00:41:24,973 --> 00:41:26,853

whole time like my butthole's tingling.

:

00:41:27,763 --> 00:41:29,773

What is swimming around me right now?

:

00:41:30,693 --> 00:41:31,923

Your butthole is tingling.

:

00:41:31,973 --> 00:41:35,603

Is that a bad sign if you jump in the

lake and your butthole starts to tingle?

:

00:41:35,823 --> 00:41:37,193

It's probably not a good thing.

:

00:41:37,433 --> 00:41:39,463

Let's clip this and use it as a promo.

:

00:41:40,933 --> 00:41:41,503

Dynae: Oh my gosh.

:

00:41:42,583 --> 00:41:44,543

Uh, welcome to our humor, you guys.

:

00:41:44,543 --> 00:41:44,903

Indeed.

:

00:41:45,063 --> 00:41:49,593

Matt: But the reason I brought up Jaws

is basically you don't see Jaws for

:

00:41:49,593 --> 00:41:54,103

the first hour plus in the scariness.

:

00:41:54,233 --> 00:41:58,323

You maybe see the fin, all that

type of anticipation type stuff.

:

00:41:58,713 --> 00:41:59,033

Yeah.

:

00:41:59,768 --> 00:42:01,058

And Pinhead was the same way.

:

00:42:01,108 --> 00:42:04,258

Like you don't even see Pinhead

until like the very end of the movie.

:

00:42:04,928 --> 00:42:06,368

And man, the acting is so bad.

:

00:42:07,358 --> 00:42:12,218

But I did just out of curiosity

because when I go on my work trips,

:

00:42:12,338 --> 00:42:14,788

I know there's a lot of movies

that you don't like to watch.

:

00:42:14,808 --> 00:42:17,348

So I tend to download

a lot of horror movies.

:

00:42:18,653 --> 00:42:19,313

And for me.

:

00:42:19,343 --> 00:42:22,423

Yeah, and then I can, I can

sift through, because I think

:

00:42:22,423 --> 00:42:23,953

I found a meme the other day.

:

00:42:23,983 --> 00:42:25,343

Did I end up sending it to you?

:

00:42:25,573 --> 00:42:26,843

You have to be more specific.

:

00:42:27,023 --> 00:42:32,233

But it was basically something along

the lines of going through 50 terrible

:

00:42:32,233 --> 00:42:34,183

horror movies to find that one gem.

:

00:42:35,053 --> 00:42:36,513

That's kind of what I do for you.

:

00:42:37,093 --> 00:42:37,543

Does that make sense?

:

00:42:37,553 --> 00:42:40,788

I watch a lot of the bad stuff, and

sometimes I'll come back and go, Hey,

:

00:42:40,788 --> 00:42:41,978

this one was actually really good.

:

00:42:41,978 --> 00:42:42,708

We should watch it together.

:

00:42:43,368 --> 00:42:44,898

Dynae: Like you watch

the Terrifier movies.

:

00:42:44,898 --> 00:42:47,158

I know right away I don't

need to watch any of those.

:

00:42:47,358 --> 00:42:51,078

Matt: Talk about movies

that will divide a crowd.

:

00:42:52,228 --> 00:42:56,368

They are the grossest things I've

probably ever seen, if that makes sense.

:

00:42:56,788 --> 00:42:59,808

Like, that is full on

torture porn for real.

:

00:43:00,308 --> 00:43:08,238

However, the villain, Art the Clown, Is

a mime and his performance is phenomenal.

:

00:43:08,708 --> 00:43:09,028

Okay.

:

00:43:09,088 --> 00:43:09,758

Like as an actor.

:

00:43:09,758 --> 00:43:10,608

I'll just trust you on that.

:

00:43:10,618 --> 00:43:10,838

Yeah.

:

00:43:10,978 --> 00:43:16,158

Like as an actor myself and as a,

you know, just movie buff and his

:

00:43:16,158 --> 00:43:18,528

performance is mesmerizing to watch.

:

00:43:18,848 --> 00:43:22,008

It's almost like I'd rather watch

a whole movie of him just being

:

00:43:22,068 --> 00:43:26,678

a mime, a creepy mime clown and

leave out all the gory other stuff.

:

00:43:26,678 --> 00:43:27,238

Other stuff.

:

00:43:27,288 --> 00:43:27,558

Yeah.

:

00:43:27,798 --> 00:43:28,558

Art the clown.

:

00:43:28,588 --> 00:43:29,278

Phenomenal.

:

00:43:29,378 --> 00:43:30,418

The movies themselves.

:

00:43:30,998 --> 00:43:31,488

Dynae: Ooh.

:

00:43:31,898 --> 00:43:32,258

Yeah.

:

00:43:32,413 --> 00:43:34,213

So yeah, we're kind of in this place now.

:

00:43:34,213 --> 00:43:37,513

It's like, we've got, with

our kids, it's like, we got to

:

00:43:37,513 --> 00:43:38,583

do the family friendly stuff.

:

00:43:38,583 --> 00:43:41,283

Like, I tried to watch Sleepy

Hollow with Cora the other day,

:

00:43:41,283 --> 00:43:42,843

but she still wasn't quite into it.

:

00:43:43,203 --> 00:43:45,123

Instantly, we tried to

watch A Quiet Place.

:

00:43:45,123 --> 00:43:46,463

We thought, okay, she might handle that.

:

00:43:46,483 --> 00:43:47,843

Because she likes Stranger Things.

:

00:43:47,853 --> 00:43:49,163

She watched all of those.

:

00:43:49,403 --> 00:43:52,963

Granted, we did, the last season

especially, kind of, you know, filter

:

00:43:52,963 --> 00:43:54,413

some stuff because she didn't need to see

:

00:43:54,413 --> 00:43:54,673

Matt: that.

:

00:43:54,713 --> 00:43:57,683

Yeah, we watched it beforehand and

knew when the bad parts were coming.

:

00:43:57,683 --> 00:43:58,193

And so kind of

:

00:43:58,193 --> 00:44:00,643

Dynae: skipped over a few or

warned her to be like, okay, you

:

00:44:00,683 --> 00:44:01,893

might not want to watch this part.

:

00:44:02,083 --> 00:44:06,403

But, we tried to watch A Quiet

Place and as soon as that one first

:

00:44:06,403 --> 00:44:07,923

scene, she was like, nope, I'm out.

:

00:44:08,288 --> 00:44:08,708

I can't do

:

00:44:08,708 --> 00:44:08,938

Matt: it.

:

00:44:09,018 --> 00:44:12,888

Well, a quiet place does

such a good job with tension.

:

00:44:12,988 --> 00:44:14,238

Yeah, she couldn't take it.

:

00:44:14,278 --> 00:44:18,138

I remember when we went and watched it

in the theater, and just how purposeful

:

00:44:18,138 --> 00:44:20,328

they make it so quiet in the crowd.

:

00:44:20,448 --> 00:44:23,468

Every time I'd eat my popcorn,

I'd like grab a handful.

:

00:44:23,508 --> 00:44:24,208

You're like, shhh.

:

00:44:25,318 --> 00:44:25,728

And then I put them out.

:

00:44:28,078 --> 00:44:28,998

Dynae: Oh, you'd be dead.

:

00:44:29,238 --> 00:44:29,498

Yeah.

:

00:44:31,283 --> 00:44:33,563

Matt: Oh, that's probably

legitimately why they did it.

:

00:44:33,643 --> 00:44:34,173

Oh man.

:

00:44:34,213 --> 00:44:35,793

I love me some psychology.

:

00:44:36,223 --> 00:44:38,663

Dynae: And maybe that's why we like

horror movies so much too, because

:

00:44:38,663 --> 00:44:41,693

there is a lot of that in there and

like psychology of fear and what makes

:

00:44:41,693 --> 00:44:43,933

people, you know, scared and stuff like

:

00:44:43,933 --> 00:44:44,173

Matt: that.

:

00:44:44,213 --> 00:44:47,293

Well, and I think people like it

too because they intentionally

:

00:44:47,293 --> 00:44:50,143

make the people in the movies do

the stupidest decisions possible.

:

00:44:50,143 --> 00:44:51,733

Yeah, and you're like,

why would you do that?

:

00:44:51,743 --> 00:44:54,323

Because you as a person would

go, well, I would never do that.

:

00:44:54,333 --> 00:44:54,613

Which is

:

00:44:54,653 --> 00:44:56,293

Dynae: why I loved the movie Nope.

:

00:44:56,598 --> 00:45:00,658

Because it was very just relatable, like

everything that's scary happened in there.

:

00:45:00,658 --> 00:45:02,768

We're like, I'm not doing, nope,

we're not going to do that.

:

00:45:04,218 --> 00:45:05,798

And the Jordan Peele movies are great.

:

00:45:05,838 --> 00:45:08,948

We've, we have watched several of

those with the kids and they do enjoy

:

00:45:08,948 --> 00:45:09,158

Matt: those.

:

00:45:09,248 --> 00:45:10,178

Get Out, Us.

:

00:45:10,698 --> 00:45:10,878

Yeah.

:

00:45:10,908 --> 00:45:11,298

All three of

:

00:45:11,298 --> 00:45:11,848

Dynae: those are great.

:

00:45:11,968 --> 00:45:15,218

But yeah, again, it's one of those,

it's like, When the movies have

:

00:45:15,228 --> 00:45:18,328

also the social commentary behind

them and stuff like that, I think

:

00:45:18,328 --> 00:45:20,088

we all really enjoy that as well.

:

00:45:20,328 --> 00:45:21,288

Those types of movies.

:

00:45:21,298 --> 00:45:22,058

So, I don't know.

:

00:45:22,078 --> 00:45:22,368

I think

:

00:45:22,368 --> 00:45:26,648

Matt: we just like movies as well that

just take chances and just go for it.

:

00:45:26,778 --> 00:45:27,708

And can surprise you.

:

00:45:27,948 --> 00:45:31,368

Like another one of our favorite

movies for our older two kids.

:

00:45:31,558 --> 00:45:32,518

It's not a horror movie.

:

00:45:32,518 --> 00:45:35,958

But it's everything everywhere

all at once because it's such a,

:

00:45:36,348 --> 00:45:39,028

yeah, it's visually super pleasing.

:

00:45:39,038 --> 00:45:40,918

You know, like there's a lot

of cool stuff that happened.

:

00:45:40,918 --> 00:45:42,848

There's a lot of things that

just come out of left field.

:

00:45:42,848 --> 00:45:43,978

You'll never see coming.

:

00:45:44,588 --> 00:45:44,998

So that's

:

00:45:44,998 --> 00:45:45,468

Dynae: another one.

:

00:45:45,858 --> 00:45:51,288

Has a very like social commentary healing

generational trauma kind of stuff.

:

00:45:51,398 --> 00:45:51,588

And

:

00:45:51,598 --> 00:45:55,978

Matt: getting into the routine of what

you're doing every day and don't just

:

00:45:55,998 --> 00:46:00,538

get into a zombie mode essentially of

just doing the same things over and

:

00:46:00,538 --> 00:46:02,008

over and over like a groundhog day.

:

00:46:02,323 --> 00:46:02,563

Man,

:

00:46:02,563 --> 00:46:04,983

Dynae: that's one we could just

do a full review on because

:

00:46:04,983 --> 00:46:06,693

that one's just my goodness.

:

00:46:06,723 --> 00:46:10,203

That's one of those movies where I feel

like I wish we had seen it in the theater

:

00:46:10,283 --> 00:46:12,923

and it's one of those that you like, you

go back and you're like, I wish we could

:

00:46:12,923 --> 00:46:15,023

have seen that for the first time again.

:

00:46:15,093 --> 00:46:15,343

Yeah.

:

00:46:15,433 --> 00:46:18,943

Those kind of experiences that it's like,

which I will say when we're talking about

:

00:46:18,943 --> 00:46:22,663

horror a little bit for the last season

of stranger things was that for me, I was

:

00:46:22,663 --> 00:46:26,203

like, I wish I could go back and rewatch

that and have that experience again.

:

00:46:26,323 --> 00:46:27,453

It was such a good season.

:

00:46:27,463 --> 00:46:27,803

Yeah.

:

00:46:27,873 --> 00:46:28,653

Season five.

:

00:46:28,743 --> 00:46:29,363

What are they going to do?

:

00:46:29,363 --> 00:46:30,603

How are you going to up that?

:

00:46:30,613 --> 00:46:33,443

That's a series obviously we've watched

with all of our kids, like we said,

:

00:46:33,443 --> 00:46:34,823

and they've really enjoyed that as

:

00:46:34,823 --> 00:46:35,223

Matt: well.

:

00:46:35,433 --> 00:46:39,343

So long story short, we

are huge Halloween fans.

:

00:46:39,373 --> 00:46:41,333

We are huge spooky season fans.

:

00:46:41,763 --> 00:46:45,963

We could obviously go on and on

and on talking about Halloween.

:

00:46:46,548 --> 00:46:48,598

And how much we love it in our family.

:

00:46:48,638 --> 00:46:50,928

But unfortunately we

should probably wrap this

:

00:46:51,458 --> 00:46:52,108

Dynae: bad boy up.

:

00:46:52,148 --> 00:46:55,228

Well, we could ramble forever on

some of these subjects, but we

:

00:46:55,228 --> 00:46:56,468

won't put you guys through that.

:

00:46:56,518 --> 00:47:00,318

But if there are movies that maybe we

haven't seen or that you can recommend,

:

00:47:00,368 --> 00:47:01,918

we would love to check them out.

:

00:47:01,918 --> 00:47:02,968

So if you've

:

00:47:02,968 --> 00:47:06,490

Matt: liked, uh, go to our social

media, go to our email, all of the

:

00:47:06,490 --> 00:47:09,318

stuff we talked about last week,

we'll give you those links again.

:

00:47:09,448 --> 00:47:10,888

Tell us your favorite scary movies.

:

00:47:10,888 --> 00:47:12,758

Maybe there's something we haven't seen.

:

00:47:12,808 --> 00:47:14,018

Maybe there's something that's.

:

00:47:14,158 --> 00:47:17,228

Huge from your childhood that you

go, Oh man, this is something that

:

00:47:17,228 --> 00:47:19,548

I grew up on and we haven't seen it.

:

00:47:19,708 --> 00:47:21,988

Let us know because we love movies.

:

00:47:22,178 --> 00:47:22,478

Yeah.

:

00:47:22,538 --> 00:47:24,908

Dynae: In general, not just

horror movies, obviously.

:

00:47:24,908 --> 00:47:29,038

So we think we're going to do more

of a movie review kind of like as a

:

00:47:29,038 --> 00:47:30,768

series kind of thing here and there.

:

00:47:30,908 --> 00:47:33,728

It'll be kind of like a, I don't

know how we work it into that, but.

:

00:47:33,928 --> 00:47:36,718

Yeah, we'll definitely do some movie

reviews here and there as a couple

:

00:47:36,748 --> 00:47:40,268

because that is something that we do

and I think that makes us strong as

:

00:47:40,268 --> 00:47:43,918

a couple is we have these interests

together and we're usually on the

:

00:47:43,918 --> 00:47:45,688

same page as far as what we like, what

:

00:47:45,688 --> 00:47:46,308

Matt: we don't like.

:

00:47:46,308 --> 00:47:46,598

Right.

:

00:47:46,788 --> 00:47:50,868

So if you have any recommendations or you

want to follow us, feel free to find us.

:

00:47:51,038 --> 00:47:54,778

Um, you can email us at happily

ever laughter podcast at gmail.

:

00:47:54,778 --> 00:47:55,228

com.

:

00:47:55,598 --> 00:47:58,838

We have an Instagram at

happily ever laughter podcast.

:

00:47:59,123 --> 00:48:02,023

We have a Facebook page,

Happily Ever Laughter podcast.

:

00:48:02,113 --> 00:48:02,773

Surprise!

:

00:48:03,073 --> 00:48:06,863

And a TikTok, which is

not Happily Ever Laughter.

:

00:48:06,863 --> 00:48:09,293

It's actually still at Self Made Misfits.

:

00:48:09,333 --> 00:48:10,493

We're trying to get that fixed.

:

00:48:10,533 --> 00:48:10,943

TikTok's

:

00:48:10,973 --> 00:48:12,683

Dynae: being dumb and it

won't let me change it for

:

00:48:12,683 --> 00:48:13,013

Matt: some reason.

:

00:48:13,013 --> 00:48:13,293

Yeah.

:

00:48:13,753 --> 00:48:14,993

So you can go find that.

:

00:48:15,218 --> 00:48:18,258

And as it evolves and changes,

you'll just already be liking the

:

00:48:18,258 --> 00:48:18,538

Dynae: page.

:

00:48:18,548 --> 00:48:18,998

There you go.

:

00:48:19,068 --> 00:48:19,428

If that makes sense.

:

00:48:19,428 --> 00:48:19,768

That'll work.

:

00:48:19,778 --> 00:48:22,508

I hope you guys enjoyed this

episode and you enjoy your spooky

:

00:48:22,508 --> 00:48:22,978

Matt: season.

:

00:48:23,018 --> 00:48:23,478

Indeed.

:

00:48:23,478 --> 00:48:27,758

Feel free to rate and review because that

will help more people find us and know

:

00:48:27,888 --> 00:48:29,858

that we're somewhat fun to listen to.

:

00:48:29,938 --> 00:48:30,108

And

:

00:48:30,108 --> 00:48:32,038

Dynae: we'd love any support

that you could send our way.

:

00:48:32,038 --> 00:48:33,968

So that's all we got for today, you guys.

:

00:48:34,338 --> 00:48:36,998

Hope you have a great Halloween

and we'll see you next time.

:

00:48:37,008 --> 00:48:37,148

We'll

:

00:48:37,378 --> 00:48:41,598

Matt: see you next time on

Happily Ever Laughter Podcast.

:

00:48:43,898 --> 00:48:44,988

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
